A KWEKWE woman on Tuesday dragged her landlord to court after he allegedly threw her property out of the house after she refused to pay rent in United States dollars.
The lady, Chipo Mahere, approached the civil court where she applied for a protection order against her landlord Patrick Magwenzi who she alleged demanded that she pays her rent in US dollars.
Mahere told the court that Magwenzi had turned violent after she indicated that she could not afford the US$40 per room as demanded by Magwenzi.
“I am appealing for protection against my landlord who has turned violent and threw my property outside. He demands that I pay US$40 per room of which I use three rooms. I cannot afford such an amount and I feel it’s abusive by the man,” said Mahere.
She said Magwenzi had no right to lay his hands on her property saying if he had any problem he should have given her a notice before evicting her from the house.
“I have no problem with moving out of his house, in fact I am no longer interested in staying in his house as he is abusive. But he should give me a notice not to just throw me out like that,” she said.
Magwenzi told the court that the problem was in fact Mahere who would vanish every month end in a bid to evade being quizzed about rent.
“She was no longer owning up to rental obligations and had developed a habit of insulting co-tenants. She was taking the house as hers since I don’t stay there. We told her children that she should pay in US$ so that she confronts us and we get to talk,” said Magwenzi.
Magistrate Vimbai Mtukwa gave Mahere three days to leave the house since she had indicated that she was no longer interested in staying there.
She also urged her to file for a spoliation saying such matters are not addressed by a protection order.
