Tennis, cricket in venue accord

A showdown between Tennis Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Cricket over the use of Harare Sports Club this weekend has been averted.

An uneasy situation had arisen after it emerged both associations wanted to use the facility for international engagements this coming weekend.

ZC will be hosting India in a Twenty20 series, while TZ entertain Moldova in a Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II tie.

Tennis matches require silence during play, while cricket is characterised by wild cheering from spectators throughout. Hence, staging the matches concurrently was bound to cause mayhem.

However, the two associations last Friday reached a compromise.

Tennis Zimbabwe administrator Cliff Nhokwara said Davis Cup matches would start an hour earlier, while T20 cricket would bowl off later in the day.

“We have decided to push our kick off times an hour back during the times the two internationals clash. This means our matches will begin at 9:30am on the days there will be cricket matches.

“The cricket matches had already been scheduled to start in the afternoon around lunchtime and we hope by that time all our matches will have concluded,” said Nhokwara.

“It was a straightforward meeting which I attended together with Tennis Zimbabwe president Regis Bhunu and Martin Locke, while the Zimbabwe Cricket was represented by MD Alistair Campbell,” he said.
