THE Zimbabwe National Chess Team are set to take part in the second edition of the virtual International Online Chess Olympiad from August 13 to September 15.
Elisha Thabo, the Zimbabwe Chess Federation public relations officer, said they were excited about being part of the Olympiad.
“It is good for chess, it keeps the game alive and, as chess people, we are full of hope that we will prevail against Covid-19,” said Thabo.
”We are confident in the selected team, which is a combination of experience and upcoming talent.
”This shows that we recognise the exploits of the youngsters and I’m certain it encourages others to excel so that they, as well, can obtain this privilege.”
Zimbabwe will be represented by Cyril Chigodo, the Behind the Walls 2021 chess champion, Roy Mwadzura, one of the bright stars of the game, Spencer Masango, the longest-serving national team representative, as well as Vitalis Mapuranga.
Kudzanayi Charinda, the champion of the 2021 African Online World Cup Prequalifying Chess Championships, is the leading player among the female representatives.
The team features Christine Makwena and Refiloe Mudodo, the current women’s national champion. The team has experience in the form of 2012 National Women’s Chess Champion, Tatenda Zengeni. Blessing Moyo, from Bulawayo, and Terence Mureya, are the juniors.
