ZIMBABWE international forward Thando Ngwenya is beginning to make his presence felt in the South African Premiership.
The former FC Platinum forward was on target for AmaZulu on Saturday, beating his counterpart Elvis Chipezeze, by Usuthu FC conceded a late equaliser to be held 1-1 by Magesi FC at Seshego Stadium.
Usuthu looked to be on course for all three points thanks to Ngwenya’s first-half strike, but John Mokone levelled for Dikwena tsa Meetse in the final minute of regulation time to see the spoils shared.
AmaZulu moved up one place on the log to fifth, leapfrogging local rivals Golden Arrows, while Magesi climbed one spot to 14th — moving out of the red zone as a result.
Against the run of play, AmaZulu claimed the lead in the 17th minute.
Magesi made a mess of defending a corner kick, and a loose ball in the penalty area was acrobatically volleyed home by Ngwenya — his second goal this week after also netting against Sekhukhune United on Wednesday.
The hosts sought a way back into the game through the remainder of the first half, but were mostly restricted to ambitious long-range efforts, with AmaZulu’s defence proving to be disciplined and well-organised.
With score still 1-0 in favour of the visitors at half time, the teams both made changes for the restart.
Magesi sent on Samuel Darpoh and Edmore Chirambadare, while Asanda Mzobe was introduced for Usuthu.
In the Scottish Premiership, Motherwell took on Kilmarnock in their final match before the September international break on Saturday afternoon at Fir Park, with the Steelmen drawing 2-2 on the day. — Agencies
