CUTHBERT DUBE was a disaster but no one – including his harshest critic – can say that his board’s decision to appoint Shadreck Mlauzi as the Mighty Warriors coach was equally bad.
For Dube and his gang of shame, the Mlauzi decision was their once in a while moment.
Yes, their decision to fire Rosemary Mugadza was political as paid the price for siding with Miriam Sibanda in a leadership battle, but their call to rope in Mlauzi for the Mighty Warriors job was magical.
I say magical with the benefit of hindsight because initially Yours Truly reckoned appointing a school teacher to take charge of the senior national team was a no-brainer.
When Zifa announced that Mlauzi, a teacher at Sikhulile High School, would be taking charge of the Mighty Warriors most of us believed Zifa were just being Zifa – nonsensical.
But half a year later no one can argue against the notion that Mlauzi has taken the women’s national team to a level Mugadza would not have taken them even if she was to last another million years in charge.
While we are at it, may some journalists stop suggesting that Mugadza deserves an air ticket to the Rio Olympic Games as a “show of appreciation for the role she played in building the team”. Cut the crap.
Or “Stop It!” in Dr Amai style.
This is no different from suggesting that a man takes along his wife’s ex to the honeymoon because he once bought some Black Opal or other beauty products for her.
Mugadza is a good woman and should have it within her to move on with life. She wasn’t going to be the Mighty Warriors gaffer forever.
Mlauzi is the man and now that he has secured us the ticket to the Africa Cup of Nations, he can concentrate on getting a driver’s license and get to enjoy the comfort of that vehicle supplied by Sir Wicknel, not the easily excitable Seh Calaz.
One thing that makes me respect Mlauzi the most is the fact that he is a man of honour. He doesn’t see his players as potential sex partners and makes calls based on merit.
They say you cannot defame the dead so I would want to say it straight up about another coach. But I would risk defaming the living players so the least said about that matter so we leave it at that.
Anyway, as the Mighty Warriors bask in glory I have a piece of marketing advice for the clothing shops dotted all over the country.
There is so much mileage to be gained in dressing Mlauzi.
I used to think Kallisto Pasuwa was the king but Mlauzi makes his Warriors counterpart look like a novice when it comes to how not to dress.
In other parts of the world the man who has led Zimbabwe to the Olympics and Africa Women’s Cup of Nations would have producers of make-over shows jostling to get him on set.
