PREMIER Soccer League president Farai Jere says he has been humbled by the way fans are returning to the top-flight league’s matches and expects the trend to continue.
The CAPS United boss said their decision to reduce the price of tickets to US$2, for the cheapest seats, appears to be bearing fruit.
After years of a marked decline in attendance numbers, there has been a surge in recent weeks with a number of matches attracting decent crowds.
Highlanders continue to lead the way and their blockbuster battle against Dynamos, this weekend, could break all the records at Barbourfields.
CAPS United and champions FC Platinum clash in another big battle at the weekend in the capital.
“The response by the fans has been awesome and as leaders of the league we want to say thank you to them,” said Jere.
“We don’t take their patronage for granted.
“They are our key stakeholders and their presence has brought life back to our stadiums.
“This is what sponsors want to see, the life at the stadiums, and we are humbled by the initiatives being taken by supporters groups to rally others to come to watch our games.
“The roadshows we have seen have brought immediate results and it’s once again fashionable for families to go and watch the PSL games.”
He said the two big games in Harare and Bulawayo this coming weekend were likely to attract huge attendances.
“We have some top, top games coming this weekend because Highlanders versus Dynamos has always been huge,” said Jere.
“Both teams are in good shape right now and they believe they can compete very well in the championship race.
“CAPS United versus FC Platinum has become quite a rivalry and it will be helped by the fact that there is belief, within the CAPS camp, that this could be a good season for the club.
“This is what supporters like to see, the competitiveness and the tough battles and I am pretty sure we will have something special this weekend.
“You can call it a Super Sunday.”
