Breeders Champagne Stakes over 1200m at Borrowdale racecourse today.
A small field of six runners have accepted to start and it’s the Peech yard who are still in buoyant mood following Got Personality’s win in the Republic Cup on July 17. They have a strong hand as she brings in half of the field. The race is the third leg of the Juvenile Series and is open for locally bred two-year olds.
And it is the chestnut Kitalpha gelding ThatWasBlazing who has a big chance to win the sprint. Karis Teetan gives the services to the equine athlete who is now going for his third run.
In the first two runs, ThatWasBlazing finished behind Kalavaer over 1100m but he was in top form as he won the 1 200m with Willie Uys on board. Stokes Hill (3) by Peech is making a maiden run and has jockey Quinton Riddle holding the straps.
The runner is a half brother to the tried and tested Captains’ Tiger and could just have the pedigree. Tatenda Guta takes a ride on Sergeant Cecil also from the Peech yard. Drawn at two, Sergeant Cecil has four runs under his hoofs and is the most experienced runner from the field.
But the gelding will have to rediscover his form from his maiden run to be able to pose a threat. There is also the two-year Supa Alpha, trained by Seb D’Aquino and was paraded as the top colt, fetching a price of US$25 000 at the National Yearling sale last year.
Another field of 11 has entered for the Maiden Plate Race 8 and is wide open. After the race today, the Borrowdale track will take a scarification break until September 9
