TO many people both in his home country, Zimbabwe and his adopted home of South Africa, Elvis ‘The Bulawayo Bomber’ Moyo is known as a knock down artist. Others call him champ, while others may be too afraid to call him at all.
At a hulking six feet (182.88 cm) and weighing in at 265 pounds (120.2 kg), the Bulawayo Bomber is by all intents and purposes a man-mountain, a colossus human being that many fear on sight. The terror escalates when he flexes his huge muscles during sparring or weigh in on fight night.
Whether in boxing gloves or MMA gloves, many cringe at the thought of his fists making contact with their bare jaws.
But to his three children 14 year- old Mickey, eight year- old daughter Kippy and seven -month old son, EJ, he is just plain old dad. This week, The Bulawayo Bomber speaks to Sunday Life via Facebook messenger and shares his life outside the ring.
Sunday Leisure (SL): What is your typical midweek?
Bulawayo Bomber (BB): I have a midweek schedule and a weekend schedule. My midweek schedule usually kicks off when I wake up at 5am. My first chore is to help my daughter getting ready for school. She is eight and that’s my favourite time of the day. By 8am I am off to gym and usually get back home at around 11:30am at which point I make my breakfast which is my first meal of the day. I love cooking so I do plenty of it.
From that point onwards I am strictly an indoors kind of person. I am a bit of a couch potato so I get glued to my TV and spend time with wifey and my own champ, my 7 month- old son EJ (short for Elvis Junior). Now this boy really knows how to give me my second work out of the day (Hahahah)
I also use this time to get in touch with friends and family through social media platforms and my phone. At around 4pm, my daughter gets back from school and I gear up for my road running.
I run for about an hour or less and then in the evening back to my online socialising, TV and time with family time. While my wife, Chiedza prepares supper for us, my son and I help my daughter out with her homework. Well I help while he tears into the books like the uneducated man he is (Hahahah). But like I said, he gives me quite the work out.
After supper we catch a movie and put the kids to bed. Then it’s time for wifey and I to catch one more late night flick before lights out which is usually around 11pm
SL: And the typical weekend?
BB: My weekend begins on Fridays. On this day as well as Saturdays I am active at nights at the Altitude Champaign Garden 6 Star Restaurant owned by my friend Damian Michaels where I work as Head of Security. In fact he is more than just a friend, he is family. He is also my sponsor and a former boxing promoter. Damian is, above all of this, my EJ’s Godfather.
Apart from being the security chief, I double up as a manager and pretty much take care of things. I’m there at 4pm and leave around 3am which takes me to a Sunday. This is a day I spend recovering, relaxing and getting ready for Monday 5am. I enjoy home cooked meals and like every true African man isitshwala le nyama elombhida (sadza with a beef and green vegetable relish). It feels good to say it like that. You must publish it like that: isitshwala le nyama elombhida.
(SL): Any last minute words to your fans?
(BB): Hahahah you made me type my bro. If you were on whatsapp I would have narrated this to you using voice notes. But anyway, so long I am in full training camp getting ready for my November 10th heavyweight fight against Briton Adam Machaj to take place in Manchester, England.
