RESIDENTS in Ward 8 in Esigodini have initiated chicken and fishing projects as a way of empowering themselves and creating employment among community members.

In an interview, Ward Councillor Alice Dube said the projects were a way of helping the members of the community to raise money so that they can be able to cater for their needs.

“We are currently running chicken projects, Internal Savings Lending project (ISAL), gardening and fish projects in the ward. These projects involve community members selling the products and then use the money to pay for their children’s fees as well as other needs,” said Clr Dube.

She said the projects were helping more than 100 families.

“There are 90 people doing the chicken project, 35 in the fishing project and 15 groups on the ISAL projects. There is one irrigation where the fish ponds projects were started to help the community breed fish and this will ultimately improve their health from consumption of the nutritious fish,” she said.

She however, said there were challenges in accessing markets for their produce.
