The circle you keep: How your network can build or destroy generational wealth

Building Generational Wealth

Who are the five most influential people in your circle?

It is a simple question, but one that deserves an honest answer.

Think carefully about the five people you interact with the most. They could be friends, relatives, business associates, mentors, colleagues or even people you look up to from a distance. These are the people whose opinions you listen to, whose lifestyles you observe and whose advice can influence the decisions you make.

Now ask yourself a more difficult question: Are these five people taking you closer to the life you want, or are they quietly taking you away from it?

This is particularly important when we talk about building generational wealth.

Generational wealth is often associated with property, businesses, investments, savings and other financial assets. However, one of the most valuable assets we can develop is a strong network of people who challenge us, inspire us, open our minds and expose us to opportunities.

Every person has the same amount of time available each day. Yet, the way we use that time and the people we spend it with can produce dramatically different results.

Consider two people with similar opportunities. One spends time learning new skills, building a business, investing, reading and developing meaningful relationships. The other spends most of their time drinking, gossiping, chasing temporary pleasures and remaining in circles that encourage irresponsible behaviour.

Years later, their circumstances may look completely different.

The difference is often found in their choices, habits and environment.

This is why our circle matters.

The people around us influence what we consider normal. If you surround yourself with people who discuss business opportunities, investments, entrepreneurship, education and personal development, you are more likely to develop a similar mindset.

You may begin asking better questions: How can I start a business? How can I invest my income? How can I acquire an asset? How can I create something that my children and grandchildren can benefit from?

But if your circle is dominated by conversations about drinking, gossip, unnecessary spending, gambling, showing off and short-term pleasure, those behaviours can gradually become normal.

This does not mean we should look down on people who are struggling. We all have different journeys, and sometimes the people around us need our support.

However, there is a difference between helping someone and allowing their destructive habits to become your lifestyle.

That is why the five-person reflection is so important.

Who is the first person you call when you have a major decision to make?

Who challenges you to become better?

Who gives you advice about money, business or investments?

Who celebrates your success without becoming jealous?

Who pushes you to keep going when you are facing difficulties?

Now turn the questions around.

Who constantly encourages you to spend money you do not have?

Who makes you feel that investing and planning for the future are unnecessary?

Who consumes your time without adding anything meaningful to your life?

Who repeatedly pulls you back into habits you are trying to escape?

The answers may be uncomfortable, but they can be revealing.

Your five people do not have to be wealthy. They do not have to hold impressive positions or have thousands of followers on social media. What matters is their mindset, character, values and direction.

One of those five people could be a mentor who has already built the business you dream of creating. Another could be a friend who is disciplined with money. Another could be someone who constantly encourages you to learn. Someone else could introduce you to opportunities you would never have discovered on your own.

These relationships can become part of your wealth-building journey.

Building generational wealth therefore requires intentional relationships.

You need people who challenge your thinking. You need mentors who have travelled a road you are only beginning to walk. You need friends who will tell you the truth even when it is uncomfortable. You need business associates who understand integrity, discipline and long-term thinking.

Most importantly, you need people who celebrate your growth rather than feeling threatened by it.

This does not mean you need hundreds of friends. Five people with the right mindset can have a greater impact on your life than 500 acquaintances who add no value to your journey.

Sometimes, however, building the right circle means changing the one you already have.

You may need to spend less time in environments that encourage destructive behaviour. You may need to attend business events where you know nobody. You may need to introduce yourself to people who are more experienced than you. You may need to find a mentor or deliberately build relationships with people who are further ahead on the journey.

Growth can require uncomfortable decisions.

As you read this, I challenge you to write down the names of five people who have the greatest influence on your life.

Next to each name, ask yourself three questions:

What am I learning from this person?

Where is this relationship taking me?

Would I want my children to develop the same kind of relationship?

Your answers could change the way you view your social and professional relationships.

Your circle today may be shaping your family’s tomorrow.

Choose your relationships carefully. Build your network intentionally. Surround yourself with people who make you think bigger, work harder, live responsibly and believe that your future can be greater than your present.

Generational wealth is not built by one decision. It is built through many decisions repeated over time.

And sometimes, one of the most important decisions is simply choosing the right people to walk the journey with you.
