The Crux: African love story that unveils celestial mysteries and family secrets

Sunday Life Reporter

IN a captivating new novel that bridges tradition, mythology and modern love, author Fanwell Wandayi takes readers on a journey into the heart of African heritage with his latest work, The Crux.

Departing from conventional narratives infused with Western influences, Wandayi’s story delves into the ancient African practice of star lore, offering a fresh perspective on love, culture and identity.

Set against the backdrop of Zimbabwean star traditions, the novel is narrated through the voice of Miriro, a teenage girl whose fascination with the Southern Cross or the Crux, guides her understanding of love and destiny.

Known locally as the “Sweetheart stars,” the constellation has long been associated with lovers, hopes and wishes in Zimbabwean culture. For Miriro, the stars are more than celestial bodies. They are a divine compass pointing her toward her heart’s desire, Gabriel, a man much older than herself.

“The Crux is my third literary work. It is an African love story with a sad ending that explores childhood beliefs, myths and the intricacies of a marriage union entered without the blessing of family,” said Wandayi.

He said the story reconnoitres the complex interface between African spirituality and the influence of Christianity and western education. Miriro’s connection to the stars reflects a deep-rooted spiritual worldview, contrasting with her friend’s perception of the sky as merely a geographical feature.

As Miriro’s feelings grow, so does her reliance on the ancient symbolism of the Southern Cross, which she believes will guide her love life. However, her journey is fraught with challenges.

The novel vividly captures the intricacies of African man-woman relationships, especially the importance placed on family and community approval.

Miriro, an orphan raised by her maternal grandmother, finds herself caught between her own desires and the expectations of her extended family.

Her eventual meeting with her paternal relatives uncovers long-buried secrets and ignites a feud that threatens to dismantle her new-found happiness.

In typical African fashion, the story underscores that marriage is not solely a union between two individuals but a ceremony that involves acceptance from the entire family or clan. Miriro’s secret Christian wedding to Gabriel, without her family’s blessing, sparks tension that culminates in difficult choices and sacrifices.

When Gabriel departs on a long business trip, Miriro’s world spirals further into uncertainty, culminating in a premature labour that leaves her hospitalised — her hopes and the celestial symbol of the Crux fading into the night sky.

Yet, the legend persists. The arrival of Gabriel’s uncle, the estate executor, signifies the enduring spirit of African resilience and kinship. Wandayi masterfully weaves feelings and emotions into a narrative that affirms the African identity as rooted in its people, traditions and stories.

With The Crux, Wandayi joins the ranks of Zimbabwe’s prominent literary voices such as Charles Mungoshi and Chenjerai Hove. His work continues to enrich the literary landscape, blending indigenous culture with contemporary themes. Currently working on a Shona novel titled Farirepi, Wandayi aims to further showcase the richness of African storytelling.

As the stars dim on Miriro’s love story, the legend of the Southern Cross endures — a testament to Africa’s enduring connection to its heritage and the universal quest for love and belonging.
