The curse of being born on 29 February

Nhlalwenhle Ngwenya .
Known as leaplings, people born on 29 February, only have the priviledge to celebrate their birthdays once in four years.

A leap year is that time when an extra day is added at the end of February every four years.

Most leaplings go through the agony of waiting to celebrate their 21st birthday four years after the actual year, while some resort to celebrating onA 28 Febraury and 1st of March.

One local urban grooves artiste based in Harare, Tafadzwa Rusike Gondo, who shares his birthday with international hip-hop singer Jah-Rule and rock singer Mark Foster, is among a few people born on 29 February and he said that it was a tormenting ordeal.

a?When I was young I did not understand the whole concept of leap year birthday celebrations. My siblings had a torrid time explaining to me why I had to wait for four years to get a cake while they got theirs on an annual basis,a? he said.

Gondo added that he did not usually wait for four years, but when itas a leap year, he makes the most to mark celebrations for his birthday.

a?I usually celebrate my birthday on the first of March, because I am not that patient to wait for four years to celebrate. Well, for those who do, itas one long wait. I believe life is too short to wait for that period,a? said Gondo.

However, Gondo admitted that the feeling of celebrating on 1 March feels more like bogus celebrations.

a?Of course there is that empty feeling when I celebrate my birthday on 1 March, it just doesnat have that hype and anticipation for oneas birthday celebration on actual date,a? he said.

If B-Metroas survey is anything to go by, people born on 29 February are few.
