The cynical side of beauty pageants

B-Metro Reporter
ITaS the eve of the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2016 and every model in camp has a chance at making the big time.

So itas normal to fantasise about the a?what if I wina?. The winner of the contest will go on to represent Zimbabwe at the Miss World pageant next year. This clearly shows that the pageant is big business.

But thereas the cynical side that people tend to shy away from when it comes to pageants.

Firstly thereas the feminist view awomen being viewed as sex objects a and providing entertainment for men. Some feminists would scream a?itas a trap!a? because of the old age view that women should conform to certain standards of beauty.

Most beauty pageants are structured in a way that only tall and slim women are considered, save for spin offs such as Miss Big or Miss Matofotofo where the fuller figure woman is celebrated. Still, the spin off pageants are struggling to stay afloat because the global economy does not endorse them.

Since all beauty pageants are scripted to certain specifications, they are like going for a job interview and being presented with a lot of very specific job requirements.

A few would qualify and they all will be very similar skills wise, body size and even height.

The question and answer segment is literally a dull moment for most pageants. That is where the a?beauty without brainsa? aspect comes from and models being called blonde.

However, for Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2016 the idea is to avoid beauty with no brains. The organisers made sure the lowest qualification for one to take part is the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level a which is the gateway to college and university.

Looking at history, the question and answer segment has been the most distressing (if you support pageants) or hilarious for those that donat subscribe to them.

It is a proven thing that models show their complete lack of understanding of current affairs or try so hard to be relevant to a point ofA giving weak answers. That is why their answers appear to be memorised and when a question is restructured itas a black out!

Bad Examples:

Q: If you were the President for one day what would you do?
A: I would have a campaign to…(my mind shuts down at this point of time at the thought of another government campaign)

Q: If you had one wish what would you wish for?
A: World Peace (mind yawns)

Q: Which sport do you think Zimbabwe will do well in?
A: The one that imports most foreign talent (showing cheek, wit and good knowledge of the scene).

Anyway, let the best beauty with brains win at the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe on Friday night.
