THE DAY ZIM SHOCKED THE CRICKET WORLD

IT was bold. It was bonkers. It was beautifully Zimbabwean.

25 years ago at Trent Bridge, Zimbabwe did the unthinkable — they declared behind and had mighty England hanging on by their fingernails in one of Test cricket’s greatest near-upsets.

Now in 2025, as the Chevrons gear up to face England for the first time in 21 years, we rewind to the moment Captain Andy Flower lit a fire that nearly burned down English pride.

Let’s set the scene — 2000, just days after a humiliating innings-and-209-run slaughter at Lord’s. Zimbabwe were bruised, battered, and branded as pushovers. But Flower? He wasn’t having it.

What followed was a masterclass in mad genius.

On a rain-soaked Nottingham deck, Zimbabwe started slow. England, led by Michael Atherton’s 136, ground their way to 374. But then came Murray Goodwin’s monster — a sizzling 250 filled with fire and finesse. The Chevrons clawed to 285-4 by Day Four, still trailing by 89… and then Flower dropped the bomb.

Madness? Maybe. But it shook England to the core.

Enter Mluleki Nkala, a teen on debut. He rattled Ramprakash. Streak cleaned up Knight. Johnson got Stewart. England were in tatters at 12-3, and the fear was real.

The chase? England weren’t chasing. They were running scared.

Zimbabwe smelled blood. Wickets tumbled. Flintoff flopped. Hick blocked but buckled. Atherton fought to a gritty 34. But with time slipping, England somehow limped to 147 all out. Zimbabwe had just five overs to chase 237 — impossible. But the message was sent:

“We’re not here to survive, we’re here to throw punches!”

That declaration sparked a new era. Zimbabwe battered Gloucestershire by 524 runs, blitzed the West Indies in the NatWest Series, and almost ran riot in Wellington later that year.

They didn’t win at Trent Bridge. But they won something bigger — respect.

Now, as Trent Bridge prepares to host Zimbabwe again in 2025, one question looms:

Will history repeat itself? Or will Zimbabwe finally finish the job?
