The Difficult Room

When my first-born son was developing through the stages as an infant, he took his time. He didn’t begin walking until he was around one year and three months old. There was nothing wrong with him. He was healthy, curious and happy. But he had something many of us dream for: a life with no pressure.

At that time, he was the only child in the house. There were no other siblings and no play mates. He explored the world slowly and comfortably, at his own pace.

Then our youngest daughter came along. She was born into a completely different environment. The house was already full of children running, laughing, exploring. We could see how much she longed to join them and be part of them. And something remarkable happened. At just nine months old, she started walking.

Here is the nugget; sometimes growth is not just about ability — it is about environment.
The Comfortable Room

Many of us spend large portions of our lives in what I call “the comfortable room.” In this room, there are no deadlines, no demanding expectations. Feedback is always soft and polite, conversations are carefully crafted to avoid discomfort and nothing challenges us that much.

At first glance, it feels wonderful. Safe. Peaceful. Predictable. But there is one major problem; the comfortable room rarely produces growth.

When nothing stretches us, nothing develops within us.
And here is the key: when nothing demands more from us, we rarely give more of ourselves. Comfort then, can quietly become the enemy of progress.

The Difficult Room
Then there is the difficult room. This is the room where expectations are high, standards are clear, feedback is honest — even when it stings and excellence is not applauded as extraordinary but expected as normal. The people in this room may include; the ever-demanding boss, the lecturer with strict deadlines, a mentor who refuses to lower the bar, situations that demand more from you…

Sometimes everything within us wants to run away. But if we stay a bit longer, we may realise that it is in these rooms that growth happens. Not because they are pleasant, but because they require more from us than we thought we could give.

Pressure Is Not Always the Enemy
We often treat pressure as something negative. Something to escape. But pressure can be a powerful teacher, revealing potential, awakening creativity and pushing us to develop skills we might otherwise ignore.

My daughter didn’t see the movement around her as intimidation. She saw it as an invitation to grow — and to become more.

Reflection of the Week
Take a moment and ask yourself:
l Am I spending most of my time in comfortable rooms?

l Are there environments I have been avoiding because they challenge me?
l Where in my life is growth being invited, but I keep choosing comfort?
Sometimes the very spaces we want to escape are the spaces designed to bring the best out of us.
Challenge of the Week

This week, intentionally step into one uncomfortable growth space.
It might be:
l The Ministry of the Holy Spirit
Taking on a responsibility you’ve been avoiding.
l Asking for honest feedback about your work.
l Starting the project you’ve been postponing.
l Volunteering for a task that stretches your abilities.

Do not run from the room. Stay in it long enough to see what it awakens within you.
Affirmations for the Week
l I do not fear environments that stretch me.
l I welcome challenges as opportunities to develop.
l I refuse to remain in spaces that limit my potential.

This week, choose to be like the little girl who saw the world moving and decided she would move too. Do not see challenges as threats. See them as invitations.
Step into the rooms where the standards are high, where excellence is expected and allow yourself to be stretched.

Because often, the difference between where we are and who we can become is simply the courage to remain in the room that demands more from us. Growth rarely happens in comfort — but it always rewards those who dare to pursue it.
