The dilemma of broke students

Latwell Nyangu, Youth Interactive Writer

College students are always broke, even if they have money, let it be known that they are always broke.

The plight of a broke student is not just a matter of empty pockets but a journey filled with resilience, sacrifice and hope.

Imagine waking up every day, the sunlight barely peeking through the curtains, as you prepare for another day of classes while broke.

In the busy corridors of academia, where dreams are woven into the desired ambition, a silent struggle unfolds.

The rumble of an empty stomach serves as a harsh reminder that the pockets are empty.

Since it is a subjective matter, for some college students, breakfast is often a luxury, and the decision to skip it becomes a cruel routine.

Most students wear brave faces, but inside, the weight of the world feels heavy.

However, in the amidst of the struggle, there are glimmers of hope.

Interestingly, the journey of students is a testament to the human spirit, one that refuses to be extinguished by circumstances.

The plight of a broke student is a tricky tapestry woven with challenges and triumphs.

One thing for sure, behind every struggle is a story of determination, a reminder that even in the darkest moments, hope can shine through.

As we enter the corridors of education, let us remember those who walk them with a heavier burden and strive to create a world where every student, regardless of their financial status, can thrive.

If you are reading this, you are probably a college student and already know this fact.

With only a few dollars to spare, a cup of instant noodles or bread with nothing is the best some students can manage.

Each meal is a reminder of the precarious balance between sustenance and survival.

As the semester progresses, tuition fees loom like a dark cloud.

The constant worry of how to pay the next bill gnaws at your concentration.

Of course, these issues are subjective since some come from the land of honey and milk, but the majority come from the land of brokenness.

This week, I am strolling on how difficult it is to be a broke student.

Of late, I have written about poverty as a  striking issue in a student’s life, among other related challenges.

Being broke doesn’t mean one is poor, but the life of students is always associated with being broke.

In simple, the money is not enough, the demands are too high.

For many students, the pursuit of knowledge is shadowed by the weight of financial hardship.

The pressure mounts as you juggle studies, work and the fear of mounting debt.

University or college life is associated with many activities, and the social life demands money, the outings require money, and the stomach needs money.

All these will fade into the background when the student is broke.

The dilemma of being broke describes the difficult choices and challenges faced by students, often involving tight budgets and potential compromises to education or well-being.

A broke student often faces challenges related to finances, academic performance, social integration and overall well-being.

Sometimes friends suggest dinner, or a weekend trip but the disappointment comes because you will be broke.

In such cases, one can opt out with excuses that mask the deeper truth, one simply can’t afford it.

Late-night study sessions turn into sleepless nights, haunted by worries of empty pockets.

Mental health services on campus are often underfunded, and seeking help can feel like an indulgence you cannot afford.

Stories of resilience emerge as students band together to share resources, from food to academic resources exchanges.

One thing to emulate from the university is that broke students learn invaluable lessons in resourcefulness, empathy and gratitude.

We all know the stereotype of the broke college students where in my case, we used to laugh at each other, but we soldiered on.

As students, we will always obsess over money and how to make it. Unfortunately, this is how we will probably spend the rest of our college careers.

College students are notorious for being broke, thanks to long hours devoted to classes and studying that limit them from going out of the rail.

Students are set up to have this broke lifestyle.

Despite all the challenges of being broke, students will always endure.

Students work so hard and live broke for however long it takes, hoping to make it big or to at least make enough to survive.

While the goal is to get an education and to be prepared for the path after college, you still need to have fun along the way.

Sadly, while there are ways to have fun without spending money, you cannot get through all of college like that.

Until we meet for a toast.
