CHEETAHS skipper, Kudzai Weston Mashawi, has announced his retirement from international rugby.
Mashawi made his Sevens’ debut in 2018, and led a largely local and young side to second spot in the Africa Men’s Sevens Cup 2022.
“It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce to you my support system and fans my move away from the Zimbabwe Cheetahs,” he said in a statement.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and encouragement throughout my journey.
“Good times and bad (times) you have stood by me. “It has made a permanent mark on my rugby career and I enjoyed my time.
“To be named captain for the nation was an honour and more so leading a group of passionate, dedicated young men who love and breathe nothing but utmost pride for the Cheetahs jersey.
“Unfortunately, it’s a part of the journey we all have to partake in and my time is now.
“I will definitely still be on the field just in a different journey.”
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union said:
“He calls time on his international career having captained a World Cup team, a feat few achieved. “Congratulations to a servant of the game and of Zimbabwe who left nothing on the field of play. “Much like his career, we know he will make a success of his future endeavours.
“Thank you Skip, the Cheetahs’ family wishes you all the best.”
