The engineer who launched Zimbabwe into orbit

THE date of November 7, 2022, is now firmly written into Zimbabwe’s history books. This was the day ZimSat-1, the nation’s first satellite, blasted off from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, USA. It seamlessly joined the BIRDS-5 constellation, reaching its final orbit on December 2, alongside Uganda’s PearlAfricaSat-1, forever changing Zimbabwe’s connection to space.

Behind this historic milestone stood Timothy Kudzanayi Kuhamba, one of three engineers who built ZimSat-1 at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. Alongside Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukondiwa and Victor Mukungunugwa (Project Manager), Kuhamba was determined to place Zimbabwe firmly on the global space map.

Then, on May 17 this year, a significant new voice emerged in the field of space education with the release of Stellar Aspirations: Transforming a Space Dream into Reality by Kuhamba. Available on Amazon, the book serves not only as a chronicle of his extraordinary journey in space engineering but also as a motivational guide for aspiring dreamers — particularly across Africa.

Kuhamba, one of the trio behind ZimSat-1, played a pivotal role in its design and construction, marking a landmark achievement for Zimbabwe in the field of space technology.

His journey showcases resilience and determination. Born and raised in Chitungwiza — a town where dreams often feel out of reach — Kuhamba aspired to build Zimbabwe’s first satellite. His academic credentials are formidable: a Bachelor of Honours in Applied Physics from the National University of Science and Technology (Nust), a Postgraduate qualification in Satellite Communication, and two Master’s degrees — one in Communication Engineering and another in Electrical and Space Engineering from the Kyushu Institute of Technology.

His expertise is further validated by his AGI STK Grand Masters Certification. He has also received numerous accolades, including the SGAC Africa Space Leader Award in 2019 and recognition as one of the Top 100 Men to Follow on LinkedIn in 2022. Yet beyond these achievements, Kuhamba’s unwavering commitment to promoting space education in Zimbabwe has been evident since 2014.

His passion was ignited when he began funding space education initiatives in his hometown. After his first lesson, he realised that children were captivated by space — often learning about it through cartoons.

“This sparked my passion for space education,” he recalled. He envisioned a future where space exploration was accessible and recognised the urgent need for education in this field.

In 2020, he founded Stellar Aspirations, an organisation dedicated to providing space education to underserved communities in Zimbabwe.

“Stellar Aspirations promotes space education through webinars and social media programmes,” he said. What began as small workshops in local schools has evolved into a comprehensive programme reaching thousands of students across Africa, offering hands-on learning and pathways to careers in space science.

After achieving his dream of contributing to Zimbabwe’s first satellite, Kuhamba felt compelled to share his journey through his book, Stellar Aspirations.

“This book encourages readers to dream big and pursue their goals, even in the face of adversity,” he said. It also aims to inspire Africans to share their stories and forge deeper connections with their communities.

The narrative begins in 2014, when Kuhamba boldly declared on Facebook, “I will take Zimbabwe to space” — a statement met with ridicule and scepticism. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his vision of seeing the Zimbabwe Bird soar among the stars.

“The path to realising my dream was far from easy,” he admits, detailing the eight years of relentless dedication it took to overcome countless obstacles.

Within Stellar Aspirations, Kuhamba shares the highs and lows of his journey, offering invaluable lessons and highlighting the collaborative efforts of his colleagues — underscoring the importance of teamwork in achieving success.

In addition to this literary work, Kuhamba has authored other scholarly materials, including Satellite Development in Africa: A Survey, which explores the current landscape and future potential of satellite development across the continent. Yet he is far from finished — he is currently working on a new title.

“I’m writing a children’s book titled Stellar Kids Space Adventures, set to release during World Space Week from October 4 to 10,” shared Kuhamba, who is now based in Kigali, Rwanda. This initiative addresses the lack of space-related literature in African schools and aims to inspire the next generation of innovators.

To Kuhamba, the children’s book, also known as “Space Stories for Future Innovators”, is more than just a story.

“It is a powerful tool for empowerment and education. The book demonstrates that space is not distant from rural areas, bridging the technological gap between rural and urban communities. By contributing to this campaign, you are supporting the publication of a unique children’s book and promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

“This project reflects our shared commitment to inspiring and educating the next generation of space technology innovators. Your support makes a difference by introducing diverse role models into children’s literature and helping to spark curiosity and resilience among young leaders.”
