The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) in Bulawayo will on August 28 host a landmark retrospective exhibition titled For Our Elders, honouring the late Charles Msimanga’s life and artistic legacy.
A pioneering artist and dedicated teacher, Msimanga left an indelible mark on both local and international art scenes. Renowned for his breathtaking murals, he transformed iconic Bulawayo landmarks, including the City Hall, the Zimbabwe International Conference and Exhibition Smart City (ZICES), churches, and libraries – into vibrant cultural statements celebrating Zimbabwe’s heritage.
The NGZ exhibition will feature a wide selection of Msimanga’s works, offering both art lovers and the public an opportunity to engage with his creativity. In celebrating his artistry, the gallery also honours the broader influence of elder artists who bridge generations and shape Zimbabwe’s cultural identity.
Beyond his artistic output, Msimanga was a mentor whose guidance helped countless young creatives refine their craft and earn international recognition. His collaborative spirit and commitment to nurturing emerging talent remain a benchmark in the industry.
For the NGZ, this exhibition is not only about showcasing art, but also about safeguarding the legacy of cultural custodians like Msimanga. Initiatives such as For Our Elders ensure that his story, and those of others like him, continue to inspire, educate, and enrich society. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
