The Parable of the Rich Fool

Luke 12:16-20
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years.

Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’”(NIV)

This man was never content, he constantly wanted the next big thing than what he had. But when he died all of it remained, so you wonder, “What did the material things benefit his soul?”

There is a letter that I came across in Pastor Joeys book, it read;
“Pastor Joey — I want to share an immediate outcome of how your message impacted me.

For years, I’ve been too focused on money. Mullah. Cash. Stash. More specifically, I’ve had a number in my head of the amount needed for me to feel comfortable so I wouldn’t have to “worry” about the future in terms of “making it.”

I felt a little uneasy about my focus in this area, but it hit me squarely between a “Ben and Lincoln” yesterday when you asked  us to think about the most successful person we know. Nobody came to my mind at first, as I don’t think about life by comparing my lot to others.

However, I settled on Warren Buffett. Good man, smart man, wise man .  . .  RICH man. When you said the person we thought about is likely tied to what we place our focus on, it hit me.

I’ve been spending too much time focused on “possessions” (money), and making sure I was storing enough away so my family won’t have to worry.

This sounds pretty noble from a human standpoint unless it is out of balance with following Christ.

Thanks for teaching me to be a better giver (eternal) and not just a great saver (temporal).

Thanks for helping me live for God and not a number.”

To be continued . . .

God Bless!
