“Collisions” a dance piece by two remarkable dancers explored the power of storytelling when it premièred at the Harare International Festival of the Arts on BancABC Day at ZB Bank Reps Theatre. According to the piece, storytelling is the oldest technology used by man to articulate issues that affect the society. The presentation was in two parts with the first one being a Zimbabwean production titled “Raramo”.

It was based on a true story by choreographer , Catherine Douglas.

The neatly done piece featured Afrikera Dance Ensemble made up of students.

For the audience it was easy to follow the story through the genius of choreographer Catherine.

There was no doubt, the piece whipped up some emotions as the audience reflected back at experiences, trials and observations of the choreographer.

In Shona language, “Raramo” simply means survival.

After the presentation, another excellent piece by a South African performer and choreographer, Jackie Manyaapelo, who began her story when she had a white wedding. Everything seemed perfect for her as seen by the effortless dances.

Somehow things fell apart along the way and she went through pain and frustration took the better of her.

She struggled with abuse and as a woman she soldiered on. The performance was produced and artistically directed by Soukina ML Edom.

The two pieces were 30 minute each and what a great show for those who turned up. Her performance was rated as a enthralling work crafted to evocative contemporary African music.

The seven virtues (chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility) create a backdrop on which the index is navigated.
