THE Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has revealed that there is a rise in theft offences among male and female inmates from January to March 2024.
According to the 2024 first-quarter prison admissions and discharge statistics report, 23 percent of the new inmates were admitted to prison for theft.
“The crimes that led to the imprisonment of new prisoners aged 15 to 60 years during the third quarter were theft, assault, burglary and robbery without firearms. The majority of the new prisoners were admitted into prison for committing theft and these constitute about 23 percent, assault constitutes 17.9 percent, burglary 9.3 percent, robbery without firearm 6.5 percent,” said ZimStat.
The report showed that a number of female inmates were in prison because of theft.
“The crimes that led to the imprisonment of women between 25-39 were theft, assault, migration related offences and unlawful acts involving controlled drugs or precursors,” read the report.
ZimStat highlighted that foreigners were imprisoned for crimes like immigration and possession of prohibited species.
“Foreign inmates were imprisoned for immigration-related offences and trade or possession of protected or prohibited species of fauna and flora and these constituted about 82.8 percent,” read the report.
