THE Thembalethu Southern Region Women’s Soccer League was officially launched in Bulawayo last night.
Zifa gave Thembalethu Foundation the naming rights to promote its primary objective of creating change in the life of the girl child through sports.
The foundation, which sponsored the region’s 2016 and 2017 end of year eight-team tournament, decided to incentivise women’s football in the region by buying title rights for this season.
Inline Academy, New Orleans, Highlanders Royals, ZRP Bulawayo, Blackboots, Magwegwe, Ubuntu, Sobukhazi, Bulawayo Polytechnic and Street Sets are the 10 teams affiliated to the Southern Region Women’s Soccer League for the 2018 season.
Thembalethu Foundation representative Talent Ncube said: “The foundation had been actively sponsoring the eight-team end of year tournament in the Southern Region Women’s Soccer League for the past two years. 2018 has seen a significant growth in the foundation, hence the decision to incentivise women’s football by buying title rights.”
The teams have been playing for nothing for the past years, but this year the foundation hopes it will change by having prize money, trophies for individual players and teams as well as football kits.
The foundation has so far given all teams warm-up kits as part of the deal and at the end of the season, all participants will receive medals with winners walking away with a trophy and gold medals. — @DecoDecent2
