A MAN from Bulawayo allegedly went on a spending spree, even hiring a taxi to take him to a toilet less than 50 metres from a beerhall, after breaking into his aunt’s house and stealing R7 200.
A court heard that Desire Muvimi (21) stole the money from a R10 000 stash in his aunt’s wardrobe.
Appearing before Western Commonage Magistrate Mr Stephen Ndhlovu on Wednesday, Muvimi pleaded not guilty to theft and was remanded in custody to tomorrow for trial.
He admitted to breaking into his aunt’s house but claimed he stole far less than the stated amount.
“I did break into the house but I only took R1 500.
This amount that they are referring to, I know nothing about it,” said Muvimi.
In his warned and cautioned statement, Muvimi admitted to living large on the money at Zothile Sports Bar in Entumbane suburb.
“I spent the money on beer and women. I would hire a taxi to take me to the toilet and back,” read the statement.
The amount he paid for the taxi was not revealed.
Prosecuting, Mr Kenneth Shava told the court that on Saturday last week, Muvimi broke a burglar bar to gain entry into Loveness Mutizwa’s house.
“The complainant went to Premier Hospital around 12PM and returned at 7PM.
She noticed her burglar bar was broken.On the following day she realised that there was R7 200 missing from the R10 000 she had hidden in her wardrobe,” said Mr Shava. “Complaint suspected accused because he had a habit of stealing money from the house.
She asked him but he said he didn’t know anything about the missing money. She instructed one Mejury Mutizwa to make a report to the police.”Mr Shava said just after Mejury had left, Loveness found a wallet at the door containing R800 and Muvimi’s national identity card.
He said the discovery of the wallet led to Muvimi’s arrest — @tannytkay.
