PARENTS with children at Moleli High School in Zvimba district are up-in-arms with the school’s authorities for failing to tighten security at the institution following the break-in into the girls’ hostel last night.
According to a Whatsapp message that was sent by the school’s headmaster, Mr Fortune Gundani, the thief sneaked into the Adavanced Level girls’ hostel at around 2am and went away with five laptops.
“I contacted Police and they immediately attended to the issue. Investigations are underway. All the learners are safe,” he said.
Mashonaland West acting provincial education director, Mr Gabriel Mhumha could not be reached for comment this afternoon but, police in Zvimba confirmed the incident.
The recent break-in follows a raid by nine armed robbers in July.
The gang, that was armed with pistols and other weapons overpowered two security guards before stealing more than US$2 000, 15 laptops, 29 cellphones and various goods.
However, parents have come out guns blazing on the authorities for failing to put enough security at the school with many fearing for their children’s lives.
“I am actually in shock. The robbery cases are just too much for Moleli and I wonder if our children are safe,” one parent who requested anonymity told The Herald.
Another parent said she thanked God that the thief did not rape the students.
“Security is put to deter us parents from visiting our children yet they are failing to put enough safekeeping measures for our children to be safe from the intruders,” the parent said.
The parents said they have since engaged the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on the way forward.
