MIDLANDS State University students were left counting their losses after a gang of thieves pounced at the institute’s campus (formerly TelOne Training College) in Gweru and broke into 15 cars where they stole laptops, phones, computer and phone accessories, among other valuables. The incident occurred on Thursday last week at around 12 noon when a group of unidentified men went to the campus and broke into 15 cars at the car park while the students, most of whom are visiting students from the Faculty of Commerce, were attending lectures.
According to sources at the university, the gang drove in and seized the opportunity when the students commenced lectures and forced open the vehicles where they stole different valuables. A source told Sunday News that the gang sped off from the campus when some students became suspicious when they saw the gang loitering in the parking area.
“A group of unidentified men drove in and broke into the cars that were in the parking areas. They stole laptops, phones, computer and phone accessories, among other valuables. One of the students spotted them and they sped off. We were then alerted by the university authorities to go and check our vehicles and we discovered that the thieves had stolen from 15 cars,” said the student who spoke on condition of anonymity.
MSU registrar Mr Erasmus Mupfiga confirmed that there was a spate of break-ins but could not give further details.
“I was not aware of the incident but I just got briefed unofficially by someone at the campus. The security department is yet to give me full details regarding the matter. I will furnish with any details regarding the matter once we establish the exact value of the goods stolen,” he said.
