Thieving caretaker jailed 9 months

Court Reporter
A farm caretaker in Beatrice who stole his paymaster’s property worth more than US$800 and sold it has been jailed for nine months.
Chrispen Vambe (22) was employed as a caretaker at Whitehouse Farm in Beatrice where he pilfered his boss’ property on four occasions. When he committed the offences, Vambe connived with his friend Masimba Masaraure, who is still at large.

Vambe admitted to four counts of theft before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini. Mr Jarabini slapped him with a 12-month jail term but conditionally set aside three months for the next five years.

Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa proved that on the period stretching from February to July this year, Vambe hatched a ploy with Masaraure to steal from his paymaster.

The two went to the farm’s shed armed with a claw hammer and a hacksaw where they stole 14×12 feet zinc iron sheets.
They sold the loot to Edmore Shayamombe of plot 27 and Chikudza, both of Taga Farm in the same area.

Their escapade ended in July when Vambe removed an engine head from his boss’ vehicle and sold it.
