AN 18-YEAR-OLD Form Four pupil from Masvingo was sentenced to three months in prison for stealing six treated gum tree poles valued at $60.
Masvingo magistrate Langton Ndokera said the court could not be lenient on Trust Nhikiti because it was not the first time that he was appearing in court facing theft charges.

Nhikiti who uprooted the poles of a dip tank security fence, told the court that he stole the poles intending to sell them in order to raise money for school fees.

“Your Worship I stole the gum tree poles intending to sell them to raise school fees. I am a student doing Form Four and wanted to pay tuition and examination fees. I do not have anyone to look up to as my guardian is not working and both my parents are late,” he said.

Prosecutor James Murambiza said Nhikiti had three months suspended from a previous conviction for theft. The six poles were all recovered.
