THE Ministry of Health and Child Care and its partners will carry out a nationwide polio vaccination programme from February 20-24, with the exception of Harare Metropolitan province, which will continue conducting cholera vaccinations.
The Government is working with six other countries, Burundi, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia, to conduct similar campaigns to ensure the protection of children.
Vaccinations will be conducted at various locations including health facilities, schools, markets, churches and bus stations.
Polio is a dangerous disease that can lead to paralysis or death in children.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), children under five years are at high risk of getting this disease.
Children will be vaccinated at birth then at Week 6, 10 and 14 followed by 9 and 18 months and then 5 years.
The first and second round of polio vaccination were conducted in October and December last year. The Ministry’s Health E Programme on Immunisation (EPI) said:
“Protect your child by having them vaccinated against polio. Health workers will visit homes to vaccinate all children below five years even if they have received the vaccine in the previous rounds.”
