THE Government has been urged to triple the number of community radio stations in the country.
Creston Matewu, chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, called for the number of stations to increase three-fold from the current 14 stations who are licensed.
Speaking at a World Radio Day Media Symposium, Matewu said community radio stations create jobs and promote economic growth in local areas.
They also provide an outlet for voices overlooked by mainstream broadcasters.
“We want a stronger and inclusive country that covers all languages in Zimbabwe as this brings in a sense of belonging and helps in sharing a livelier experience within communities.
“There is a need to licence as many community radio stations as possible.
“For instance, South Africa has over 185 community radio stations and we should emulate that.
“Through the opening of airwaves, a number of youths in those areas can also benefit from being employed within their communities instead of waiting to be employed by main broadcasters.
“These stations will foster economic growth in their communities as local businesses and entrepreneurs will have a chance to showcase various initiatives that they are doing in those communities,” he said.
The Government aims to licence 20 community radio stations this year alone.
