A 24-YEAR-OLD Plumtree man allegedly hung himself from the roof of a bathroom at his parents’ house over an undisclosed reason.
This was after he attempted to commit suicide about three weeks back by drinking an overdose of pills.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele said Obey Ndlovu’s body was found by his young sister on Friday last week at around 6 am in Mathendele Suburb.
“I can confirm that we recorded a suicide case in Plumtree where a 24-year-old man Obey Ndlovu was found hanging from the roof in a bathroom. Investigations are still underway and we are still to ascertain the cause of the suicide. As police we urged people to desist from resorting to suicide when they are going through challenges. People should seek counselling or engage someone they can talk to,’’ he said.
Ndlovu’s uncle who is also the Plumtree Town Council chairperson, Fanisani Dube said his nephew left a suicide note where he bade farewell to several people but did not state the reason for taking his own life.
Dube said Ndlovu drank about 60 Disprin pills that had expired about three weeks back. He said Ndlovu later vomited the pills which saved his life. Dube said he engaged his nephew over the incident but he refused to disclose what was troubling him. He said the family assumed that after the incident Ndlovu would not make another suicide attempt.
“Obey was my nephew and he tried to commit suicide about three weeks back by overdosing pills. He drank about 60 Disprin Tablets that had expired which he found in the house but lucky enough he vomited all of them which is probably why he survived that day. On Friday morning when his young sister woke up she found a suicide note which Obey had placed on the passage.
“She rushed to their aunt who stays close by and showed her the letter. They went back to the house and looked around for Obey but couldn’t locate him. As they passed by the bathroom window outside they saw him hanging from the roof by an electric cord. They alerted me and I also rushed to the house. We don’t know why Obey committed suicide because in his note he left he was bidding farewell to different people and apologising for taking his own life,” he said.
Dube said in the suicide note Ndlovu also stated that he did not have a reason to live.
He said the day before he took his life Ndlovu had not shown any signs of being troubled. He said before returning home for the night Ndlovu spent some time at 4 Jays Sports Bar with his friends.
