Newtown, Johannesburg, today, after a successful run in Grahamstown, Edinburgh in Scotland, and New York.
Ntshinga, who endeared herself to audiences with the funny way she answered the phone as a receptionist with the phrase: “Shukushukuma Ad and Print, Saw’bona” on the sitcom Velaphi on SABC1- has been writing and directing plays since 2005.
During her self-imposed hiatus, Ntshinga also worked as a lecturer at the University of Cape Town’s drama department.
The Cape Town-based performer last appeared on TV in SABC1’s drama series Interrogation Room as Captain Nomsa Dlamba.
“I am looking forward to the opening (night in Johannesburg) after the (Mies Julie) show had a successful run in Grahamstown.
“We did extremely well in Scotland and New York, winning five awards in Scotland,” Ntshinga said yesterday.
She said Mies Julie tackles the important issue of land reform through the telling of a unique story that happened at a time when colonialists were ruling South Africa, “compared with what is happening currently”.
“There are interesting elements of race, colour and love added to balance the storyline,” she said.
Ntshinga said she found the script of producer Yael Farber’s show “very challenging and interesting”.
To nurture aspirant stars, Ntshinga has established a theatre school in Langa, Cape Town, “through which I mentor children from the townships about how to make it in auditions”. – Sowetan.
