BULAWAYO’s Thorngrove Hospital is set for a major facelift with the city council prioritising buying critical material for the Tuberculosis isolation centre, the Mayor, Councillor Martin Moyo, has said.Clr Moyo told Chronicle after conducting a guided tour around the city’s health centres, children and old people’s homes on Monday that Thorngrove Hospital was in dire need of new equipment to improve health service delivery.
“The hospital is fully functional but the buildings need to be improved. The hospital has been operating for many years and its buildings are now old and need renovation,” Clr Moyo said.
He added: “This tour was very fruitful because it helped us to appreciate the challenges facing the hospital. The institution needs laundry equipment, gloves, wards trolleys, and bins.”
Clr Moyo expressed concern over broken doors and dilapidated veranda shades, which he said were making patients uncomfortable.
“Most of these do not require much money. We are going to buy these materials as soon as possible,” he said.
Council’s senior public relations officer Nesisa Mpofu said the mayor’s visits were part of council’s programme to wish patients a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
“We have already visited Ekuphumuleni and Entembeni Old People’s homes, Thembiso Children’s Home, Mpilo Central Hospital, United Bulawayo Hospitals, Ingutsheni Central Hospital and Mater-Dei Hospital to wish patients a merry Christmas and speedy recovery,” said Mpofu.
She said some of the homes and hospitals will benefit from the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.
