A thought-provoking theatre production, Denzel & Washington, will take centre stage at Amakhosi Cultural Centre on September 7 as part of the “Plays on Sunday” series, presented by Stanis Theatre Production.
The play tells the story of a generation navigating life without a roadmap, set against a society that often avoids uncomfortable conversations. It explores emotional scars and opens dialogue around sex, health, and personal responsibility.
Performed on a single stage by actors Michael Makatini and Michael Muderere, Denzel & Washington runs for 60 minutes but delivers a powerful narrative packed with nuance and truth. The production team also includes Diatra Kadzombe (Costume Designer), Chantelle K Chisir (Set Designer), Emmanuel Mduduzi Chidakwa (Sound), and stage managers Shown Kembo and Andile Sibanda.
The story centres on 17-year-old Denzel Chapeyape, who finds himself trapped not in a cell with bars, but in one built by choices, silence, and regret. Through storytelling, physical theatre, and rapid character shifts, the actors portray a world that spans schoolyards, hospital rooms, and moments of humour, judgment, freedom, and fear.
Muderere said the production aims to spark conversation and social awareness.
“This isn’t just a play. It’s a movement. We want to tour schools, universities, and community spaces in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, provoking dialogue on sex, consent, masculinity, and accountability.”
The team also envisions collaborations with health organisations and NGOs to host post-show discussions, as well as participation in regional and international theatre festivals. Plans are underway to eventually adapt the production into a film, docu-series, or web project to reach a wider audience.
On the title, Muderere said, “Denzel & Washington sounds playful and cinematic, almost misleading. But that’s the trap. Life at 17 moves from comedy to crisis in a heartbeat, from laughter to silence, from tension to tenderness.”
