THREE armed robbers who allegedly went on a robbing spree in Kwekwe attacking residents and farmers have been arrested.
Steward Magutshwa (27), Master Ngwenya (32) and Peter Tembo (35) were arrested recently in Gweru. In carrying out the robberies, the trio armed themselves with shovels, knives, knobkerries, axes, iron bars, machetes and a pistol.
A source said on 2 June, the trio allegedly went to farms located along Old Gokwe Road in Ameveni and upon arrival they attacked farmers with knobkerries and iron bars leaving them severely injured. They allegedly robbed them of three cell phones, a gas cylinder and an undisclosed amount of cash.
On 4 June they went to a mine situated in Kwekwe and upon getting there, they went to three homes and attacked residents while demanding money. They allegedly robbed them of cell phones and other valuables. After carrying out the robbery they went into hiding.
It is said on 14 June they boarded a Honda Fit car from Kwekwe and headed to Redcliff Township. Upon arriving there, before they alighted from the Honda Fit they manhandled the driver before robbing him of US$10 and Samsung Galaxy A3 cell phone worth US$200. They were arrested three days later while selling the cell phone in Gweru. Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.
“We applaud members of the public for giving police officers a tip-off about the robbers leading to their arrest. We encourage other community members to emulate such a wonderful gesture so as to get rid of the criminals in our society,” he said.
