Three die of cholera

over the past week.
Two people died at home in Rupang-wana communal lands near the border with Manicaland province while the other person died at Chiredzi District Hospital.
Sources say the outbreak might have been caused by people who came from Manicaland Province where cases of the disease have been reported.
Masvingo Provincial medical director, Dr Robert Mudyiradima, on Thursday confirmed the deaths, adding the situation was under control.
Dr Mudyiradima said the Ministry was on high alert and working round the clock to make sure that the disease, which was more rampant in Rupang-wana, Mundeyo and St Joseph communal lands in Chiredzi, was contained.
“There have been three deaths so far in Chiredzi after two people passed away at home in the Rupangwana area while one died at Chiredzi District Hospital where he was hospitalised.
“A total of 122 cases of the disease have been reported and attended to at various clinics in the area.”
However, I must point out that the situation is under control and is being closely monitored to make sure that there is no more loss of life,” he said.
Dr Mudyiradima said the outbreak of cholera had its origins in Manicaland province.
“The cholera is being imported from Manicaland Province. That is why areas in Chiredzi near the border with Manicaland Province are at high risk . . . in fact the disease was imported into Chiredzi by some people who had gone to Chisumbanje for work and when they returned, there was cholera outbreak,” said Dr Mudyiradima.
Chiredzi has been more vulnerable to cholera outbreaks in the whole of Masvingo over the past six months and the deadly disease has claimed more than 10 people with several more cases reported over the same period.
