Three learners drown in Nkayi

THREE learners from Tsheli Primary School in Nkayi District, Matabeleland North Province drowned as they were playing along Kana River on Thursday.

Two of the bodies were retrieved from a well along the river while the other body was retrieved from the river.

Police identified the deceased learners as Blessing Tshuma (8) a boy, Thandolwenkosi Tshuma (8) a girl and Nkosikhona Tshuma (4) a boy from Wakufa Village. The police said the three were playing along the river when the  incident happened.

“On the October 26 the three now deceased left their place of residence at around 4pm going to Kana River where they usually play and did not come back. The guardian of the three, Pinklot Tshuma advised other villagers who organised a search team but could not find them,” said the police in a memo.

The following morning at 7am, the search team spotted the body of one of the three floating in Kana River.

“The matter was reported at Gwelutshena Police on Friday and police attended the scene. The other bodies were retrieved from a 2,7 metres deep well, which is along Kana River. The bodies were inspected and no visible injuries were observed and no foul play is suspected. The matter is still under investigation,” reads the memo.

Nkayi District Development Co-ordinator Ms Matilda Mlotshwa confirmed the incident and saying they were made aware of the sad incident. She said the three will be laid to rest on Monday with the assistance of Nkayi Civil Protection Unit and Regional Funeral Parlour.  — @themkhust
