It was the cake’s sheer size that got everybody talking.
But the number of man hours put into bringing out that perfect finish would leave anybody dumbstruck.
Three months!
That’s the precious time it took bakers to come up with President Mugabe’s birthday cake, an impressive miniature of the Great Zimbabwe Monument. At 92kg, the cake brought the Houses of Stone to life as the enchanted throng at the birthday celebrations stood between the replica and actual imposing structure.
Even the birthday boy himself must have marvelled; at least that’s what his gaze and smile appeared to suggest.
It was a spectacle the plateau peoples would have admired, too.
“It is a fruit cake sponsored by some companies that supported the event,” says an official privy to goings-on.
“It took more than three months to produce as it was constantly weighed to make sure it reached a perfect 92kg.”
And while it took three months to put the cake together, it took mere minutes for eager palates to dis-assemble it.
Bon appetit!
