Three people died while 14 others were injured in three separate accidents that occurred on Sunday along the Harare-Masvingo highway.
The first accident occurred around 1am at the 149km peg along the Harare-Masvingo highway, where one person died. The driver of a Honda Fit driving towards Harare alone rammed a haulage truck parked on the side of the road when approaching the 149 km peg, suffering severe head and leg injuries. He died on the spot.
The second accident occurred at the 98km peg on the same road around 7am, where the driver of a Nissan Almera vehicle, with four passengers, lost control, veered off the road, hit a sign post and overturned once, before the vehicle landed on its wheels.
All passengers were injured, and one was pronounced dead on admission at Chivhu General Hospital.
The third accident occurred around 6pm on the same day, on the same road at the 20km peg near Harare, involving seven vehicles, resulting in many injuries and one death on arrival at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare.
Mashonaland East police provincial spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed the fatal accidents and called on motorists to exercise caution and avoid speeding.
“We urge drivers to always exercise caution on the roads. We call on drivers to avoid speeding,” he said.
