THREE acts made it to the finals of Plays on Sunday drama competition, after a tight preliminary round contest held over the weekend at Amakhosi Cultural Centre. The competition featured five productions that battled it out for the three positions available, to headline Intwasa festival, which in conjunction with Plays on Sunday will host the final at the same venue on Sunday.
Winners were selected from the best set plays and the three productions that made it to the finals are Madalaz, Soul Mates and Shoes.
When the results were announced fans showed their displeasure after it became evident that, plays which featured actors chosen as best actor and actress were not among the three that made it to the finals.
The best actor and actress received hampers from the organiser who thanked them for coming and providing stiff competition even though they ended on the losing productions.
Fans questioned the logic of having a best actor from a play which failed to make it to the finals.
“I do not understand why the best actor was selected from the Crocodile Flats production, but the play is not in the finals. How could he be the best if he could not take his play to the next round,” said a fan who identified himself as Pride.
All the productions showcased top class actors who created a great atmosphere in the arena with their artistic qualities.
“These guys can really act, there is plenty of untapped talent in Bulawayo and a lot needs to be done in order to take this to the next level,” said Pride.
The three plays chosen will headline Intwasa festival which begins today.
Show organiser, Jeffrey Sibanda said he was happy after everything he set out to achieve went according to plan.
He said the event has witnessed a growth in terms of participation.
“This year we have seen significant growth compared to other years and after the finals we will continue with this programme, so that we nurture talent in preparation for next year. We are in the process of registering plays for next year’s competition and we have registered seven plays so far, but we need about 52 plays. I urge actors to register now and avoid coming at the last minute,” Sibanda said.
He said they have entered into a partnership with Sphiwo Sami talent search spearheaded by Iyasa for a competition that will include schools drama competition.
The finals will be held on Sunday in what promises to be a stiff but entertaining competition.
