BULAWAYO-based stand up comedian Clive Chigubu has encouraged other comedians in the country to stand up and be counted on the comedy scene. In an interview, Clive Chigubu said it is up to comedians to entertain the country while at the same time developing the art.
“We are here to give Zimbabweans a good time. Whenever I perform, I always give my best because this is the talent God gave me. We have a lot of comedians in this country, but there is no platform for them to showcase their talent, so they should fight for their recognition,” he said.
Chigubu said stand up comedy is entertainment for the whole family and can be used to build strong family ties and at the same time making people laugh.
“My job as a comedian is a fascinating one. I have to teach good things to my audience in a way that does not make them angry. At times someone might think I am talking about him and gets angry. What makes it easy for me is that I mix my theatrical skills with jokes and always avoid over stepping my boundaries,” he said.
“I have been fortunate in my journey. I have taken part in so many festivals throughout the country and I have a huge following now. People are beginning to understand the concept of stand up comedy and I urge more comedians to take this opportunity and help grow the genre,” he said.
Chigubu has set up a comedian training programme titled “Clive Chigubu Presents,” where a number of up-and-coming comedians are being groomed.
“We need to give space to up-and-coming comedians. In Bulawayo, there is only Ntandoyenkosi Moyo and I. In Harare, they have about 10 comedians. We want to give a platform to up-and-coming comedians to showcase their talent. We are thankful to a number of people who have been helping us in this cause, one of them being, Cont Mhlanga,” said Chigubu.
Three up-and-coming comedians that have risen from his programme are Zwelithini Makena, Marshall “The General” Mpofu and Keith “The Jukebox” Nkosi.
He said although the budding comedians exhibited signs of stage fright, they always give a good account of themselves with very short, but hilarious jokes when ever they perform.
Chigubu said fans should give stand up comedy a chance and attend such functions to support their effort.
