A DARK cloud has engulfed the Masikili community in Jambezi under Chief Shana, on the outskirts of Victoria Falls following the tragic death of a three-year-old girl, who was attacked by a crocodile while fishing with her family along the Matetsi River.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 3PM. The child, Grace Chafudzika was in the company of her mother, Ms Tariro Tsonzowori (33) and her 12-year-old brother, Gerald Mpala.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident yesterday.
“I can confirm that we received a report of a tragic case in which a minor was attacked and killed by a crocodile along the Matetsi River. A search operation is underway and more details will be released in due course,” he said.
Witnesses said the family had gone fishing near Matetsi Bridge when the reptile suddenly emerged from the water. It initially lunged at Gerald, who screamed and managed to escape.
The crocodile then turned to Grace, who was standing a few metres from the water’s edge, seized her and dragged her into the river.
Her mother reportedly tried in vain to scare the reptile away by throwing stones.
Police in Jambezi received the sudden death report later that evening from the traumatised mother.
Police officers, working together with rangers from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), rushed to the scene. However, rescue efforts were hampered by darkness and poor visibility.
The search continued yesterday, with ZimParks rangers intensifying efforts in the area. Authorities confirmed that partial remains had been recovered while the search operation continues.
Matetsi River is known to have a large population of crocodiles. Communities in the area have previously raised concerns over increasing human-wildlife conflict, particularly affecting villagers who depend on fishing and river water for their livelihoods.
