Tobacco group ejects Zimbabwe’s Gold Leaf after accusations of dealing in illicit trade |

The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (FITA) has terminated the membership of one of its members, Gold Leaf Tobacco Corporation, with immediate effect, it said on Tuesday.

The association, which represents about 80% of licensed cigarette manufacturers in Southern Africa, did not immediately give reasons for the abrupt termination.

However, the Zimbabwean-owned Gold Leaf, which distributes tobacco brands such as Voyager, RG, Chicago, Sharp and Savannah told Fin24 in a written response that it was in fact the one that pulled the plug on FITA membership, not the other way around as tweeted by FITA.
