Tocky Vibes, Trevor D shine

Weekender Correspondent
DANCEHALL prodigy and man-of-the-moment Tocky Vibes, along with talented urban grooves sensation Trevor Dongo, are currently hogging the limelight on radio Top 20 hit lists to prove that local music has no doubt come of age.

Their latest songs are trailblazers topping the charts and frequenting on both the Star FM and Power FM radio Top 20 hit lists.

In last Saturday’s Power FM Top 20 hit list, Dongo had two songs on the chart busters. He was sitting on top with his track ‘Africa Girl’ featuring Soul Jah Luv, and his other track, Kana Ndinewe, was on position 20.

On the Star FM Top 20 hit list ‘Africa Girl’ was on position seven.

The Rugare-born dancehall chanter, Tocky, on the other hand, was on number one on the Star FM Top 20 hit list with his track Ngoma Dzonaka.

On the Power FM hit list his song Mhai, which is the song of the moment, was on position six from position two the previous week, while his other track, Ndini Ndinorira, was on position 15.

Soul Africa is also doing well on both charts with their track Zvinhu, which is on position nine on the Star FM chart and position 13 on the Power FM chart.

Of late, young musicians are ruling the roost to show how their musical depth and lyrical aptitude is now appealing to broader audiences. Before the 75 percent local content policy was first introduced in 2001 in the arts sector, the music charts were dominated by American and Western popular music. However, Government’s decision to prop up local content saw the birth of the urban grooves genre and the rise of a number of youthful artistes.

Present-day local music is now competing aggressively with international music which is evident of how people vote on the music charts on different radio stations.
