Toddler (3) dies after drinking mahewu

laced with poison.
The mother Ndaziiveyi Kwaramba mistook the poison for sugar.

She gave the contaminated drink to her son Maridzo Custom who complained that the mahewu was tasteless.
She tested the drink herself before the son collapsed and started vomiting.
According to the family spokesman, Pattison Custom, Maridzo died soon after drinking the poisoned mahewu.

Pattison said the deceased’s father Philemon Custom bought the unknown pesticide on Friday from vendors and did not inform his wife.
He intended to kill houseflies.

The mother looked for sugar and could not find it until she came across the sugar-like poison in a plastic bag.
She reportedly put the poison in the mahewu and served it to her son.
The child was taken to Mufakose Poly clinic and was pronounced dead on arrival.

At the clinic, the mother started shivering and vomiting and was attended to before being transferred to Harare Hospital where her condition is reported to be stable.
The father, Philemon said he did not suspect foul play and that his wife would not have used the pesticide had she known it was poison.

Police at Crowbrough Way Police Post confirmed the incident.
