Tongaat Hullets Zimbabwe has started the disbursement of its donation of 300 000 litres of ethanol, which will be used in the production of sanitisers by different organisations in different parts of the country.
In an interview with The Herald yesterday, THZ corporate affairs and communications manager Ms Adelaide Chikunguru said deliveries of ethanol to all provinces were in progress.
“We have started disbursing the 300 000 litres of ethanol, which we presented to his Excellency the President of Zimbabwe Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa last week, to all the county’s 10 provinces. As you know, ethanol is a key ingredient in the production of sanitisers, we believe this donation will go a long way in the fight against the pandemic,” said Ms Chikunguru.
The sugar milling giant also announced that it had received medical instruments, personal protective equipment, sanitisers and detergents worth $12 million, which will be distributed to the seven districts in Masvingo Province.
It is almost done with the refurbishment of Chiredzi General Hospital, which has been designated as the district’s isolation centre.
“We are pleased to announce that we have successfully procured medical instruments, personal protective equipment, chemicals and detergents, thermometers and sanitizers that would be distributed among Masvingo Province’s seven districts,” she said.
“The consignment is already at our storage facilities in Hippo Valley and we will hand them over to the provincial leadership.”
This comes after the Masvingo Provincial Covid-19 task force led by Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Ezra Chadzamira received massive equipment for various isolation centres in the province.
On Tuesday, the team toured Sango Border Post and Chikombedzi Mission where the medical superintended Dr Kelvin Mawana highlighted a number of challenges they were facing.
“As one of the isolation centres in Chiredzi District, we have quite a number of challenges which might affect the execution of the anticipated tasks. Our mortuary has not been functioning for the past 10 years,” he said.
“We have no running water, all our ambulances are down, our staff needs training on how to handle Covid-19 cases. We need personal protective clothing and the continued dissemination in surrounding rural communities since the greater part of the area has no mobile and radio signal.”
Minister Chadzamira, however, said the province was geared towards improving the provision of medical care to all patients hence the need for everyone to be on board.
