In a move likely to see more senior doctors going back to work, one of Zimbabwe’s top surgeons who has been strongly behind the withdrawal of labour by junior and senior doctors, Dr David Chimuka, has returned to work.
Dr Chimuka, together with paediatric surgeon Dr Bothwell Mbuwayesango, was temporarily suspended from the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences on allegations of inciting junior doctors to withdraw labour.
He was later reinstated following an outcry from fellow doctors.
In a social media post, which he later confirmed to The Herald, Dr Chimuka said all senior doctors must consider going back to work while pursuing avenues to meet President Mnangagwa to air their grievances.
He said his decision to return to work followed considerations of the festive season, the Higher Life Foundation intervention, an additional incentive by Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, as well as the fact that all junior doctors had returned to work.
“I just want to say that we are all in agreement with what our executive is doing, but they can only go that much and we have been in this struggle more than 100 days and we are approaching a very dangerous time, which is Christmas time and there will be many accidents because it is also going to be very rainy,” said Dr Chimuka
“I just want to appeal to all of us to think of lives that are going to be lost. I know we have lost many so far and we have tried to negotiate with our Government and our executive has gone to see the Minister himself.”
Dr Chimuka said considering that their last meeting with the Minister yielded no results, senior doctors must compile a document on the state of affairs, which they will go and present to the President.
He emphasised the need by the doctors to pursue this route while at work.
