TALENTED South African motorcyclist Themba Khumalo will be taking part in this year’s edition of the Toyota Castrol One Hour Endurance race at the Victoria Falls Road Circuit on Saturday.
Khumalo is one of South Africa’s youngest and only black rider to win a Motoring South Africa sanctioned series, the Northern Regions Pocket Bike Championship in 2008, 2009 and in 2010 finishing third in the fledging series.
Leonora Young, the promotions manager of the ever-popular Three Hour Endurance Race, confirmed that Khumalo is part of the foreign riders that will be in the One Hour Motorcycle Endurance Race.
“Khumalo is one of the riders that is expected to be part of the One Hour Endurance race and is expected to be in the city on Thursday,” she said.
The 18-year-old motorcyclist will be competing against local favourites like Fuzzy Walker and BMC’s chairman Ian Gutherless.
Visiting from the capital Phil Archenoul will be there and is expected to give Bulawayo boys a lot of competition, but all eyes will be on the defending champion Walker who won last year.
According to his online profile Khumalo competed in two rounds of the European Junior Cup in 2011, held in conjunction with World Superbike events, with a fourth place finish in Italy. He returned to South Africa when a proposed sponsorship did not materialise completing the season competing in the Northern Regions 150 Championship, where he established himself as a front runner in that class.
Young said Saturday’s meeting would be a family event and invited all racing fans to the Falls Road Circuit.
“Gates open at 8AM starting the day with sprint races for both cars and motorcycles followed by the One Hour Motorcycle Endurance race at 1PM and Three Hour Endurance at 3pm,” said Young.
She said there would be fun for the whole family with jumping castles, Father Christmas, full bar and catering. Entry for adults has been pegged at $5 per head and all children under the age of 12 will have free entry.
