Town United gain on log leaders Chapungu

Midlands Sports Correspondent
SECOND placed Town United reduced the gap between them and log leaders Chapungu to 10 points when they edged a stubborn FC Platinum Under-19s 1-0 in a Zifa Central Soccer League match played at the weekend. United took advantage of Chapungu’s slip up when they drew 1-1 with struggling Mvuma side NM Academy away in the gold mining town.

The two sets of results gave the border town side gaffer John Phiri a glimmer of hope that they still have an outside chance of pipping Chapungu to the sole promotion ticket to the topflight league.

“The chances are very slim (of gaining promotion) but anything can happen.
“What we need is to beat them and hope that other teams within the league will do the job for us,” he said.

However, it will be a tall order for Town United to gain promotion considering that even if they win all their remaining matches they will finish with 72 points while Chapungu are now on 61 points and if six points are awarded from their matches against

Gwanda Ramblers and Tripple B Academy who have been sacked from the league they will have 68 points.

The airmen will need just five points from the other matches to be assured of Premiership football next season.

In other matches, MSU got the better of Hwahwa in the Gweru derby which saw the varsity side beating the correctional services team 3-2.
At Mbizo Stadium, Silo United and asbestos miners Gaths Mine shared the spoils as they played to a 1-1 draw.
