TOWNSEND High School yesterday honoured  its athletics star Yvonne “Mtshina” Vanhuvaone in recognition of her outstanding performance on the track this year.
Besides scooping 24 medals on the track, the Form Three student also qualified for the prestigious World junior championships.
During the school’s speech and prize giving ceremony yesterday, the 15-year-old Vhanuvaone, who was also a member of the Bulawayo provincial Youth Games teams, was given a special blazer by the school.

Vanhuvaone was crowned overall athletics and sports girl of the year,  after her impressive haul of medals at National Youth Games, Nationals, Southern Africa Seniors championships, Cossasa  and Africa Youth championships where she got the only medal for Zimbabwe.
Townsend Sports Director Rugare Dhure said Vhanuvaone owed her success to her dedication to sport.

“We have awarded Yvonne with a special blazer specifically made for her. It has traditional Townsend colours, we are proud of her,”  said Dhure.

Townsend High School headmistress Millicent Moyo said the school is behind Vanhuvone as she has became an inspiration to other pupils.
“What  she has achieved has been an inspiration to other children, now they know what they can achieve through sport and she has always received unconditional support from the school and her colleagues who even donate pocket money for her  whenever  she travels,” said Moyo
Vanhuvaone who is an orphan thanked all the support she got from the sponsors.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been supporting me along the way, I hope they will continue doing their good work,” she said Mtshina.

She said her dream was to represent the country at the Olympics in the near future.
“I will keep on working hard to achieve that dream,” she said.

Mtshina along with her teammates Gertrude Nxumalo, Linnet Furera and Sharon Mtinsi came third in a relay at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Marathon last month.
